There are a lot of differences between the movie and the book. Let's list them here!
Major difference: In the book, there's no war between humans and dragons. The humans actually train their dragons in the book, hence "How To Train Your Dragon".
Major difference: Night Fury is a movie-only species. In the book, Toothless was a Common/Garden Dragon, about the size of a Terrible Terror and he was called Toothless because his only tooth fell out.
